2ndGrade Training Workshop
Second grade students are taught phase 5.5 (sound families) and phase 6 (prefixes and suffixes) within the Rainbow Phonics Scope and Sequence.
This under-30-minute training video from Jessica Farmer provides an overview of Rainbow Phonics at second grade. Jessica explains how Rainbow Phonics is grounded in the Science of Reading and follows a clear Scope and Sequence for graphemes and heart words.
Decodable readers are included throughout, each aligned to the Scope and Sequence. The Teacher Planner for 2nd Grade introduces the lesson with teach, practice and apply sections, following the teaching strategy of I do, we do, you do. Every lesson has daily matching slides. These are available FREE from the RainbowPhonics.com website and editable.
This workshop provides an example of reviewing the sound family /ai/ and the daily lesson slides associated with the lesson. The heart word ‘they’ is introduced to show the ‘ey’ makes the /ai/ sound in ‘they’. Homophone examples are introduced to show how different graphemes can make the same sound. Grapheme cards are also grouped to show the sound family /ai/: pain, day, make, baby, and prey. The focus is on understanding the /ai/ phoneme can be represented by different spelling patterns. Decodable word building is then used to consolidate this learning.
There is also a lesson example from Phase 6 teaching the prefix -un. The focus is on modeling the addition of prefix-un to change the meaning of the word and word building by adding the prefix-un.
